Common Wedding Planning Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

August 10, 2026 / by Sarah Smith / Leave a Comment

Planning a wedding is incredibly exciting, but with so many decisions, suppliers, timelines and costs to manage, it’s easy for things to become overwhelming. Even the most organised couples can find themselves making decisions they later wish they’d approached differently.

As experienced Perth wedding planners, we’ve helped thousands of couples bring their weddings to life, and we’ve seen the little things that can make the planning process easier, as well as the common mistakes that can create unnecessary stress.

Here are some of the most common wedding planning mistakes we see and how you can avoid them.

1. Booking Suppliers Before Setting a Budget

It can be tempting to start booking your dream photographer, florist or venue as soon as you get engaged, but doing this before establishing your overall wedding budget can make things difficult later.

Your venue and catering may be your biggest expenses, but florals, photography, entertainment, styling, furniture, stationery, transport and all the smaller details can quickly add up.

Before making major bookings, establish a realistic overall budget and decide which elements of your wedding matter most to you.

Confetti Tip: Leave a little room in your budget for upgrades and unexpected costs. Having some flexibility makes the later stages of wedding planning much easier.

2. Choosing a Venue Before Understanding the Full Cost

The venue hire price isn’t always the true cost of having your wedding at a particular venue.

Before booking, find out exactly what is and isn’t included. Depending on the venue, you may need to separately organise furniture, lighting, catering, bar staff, glassware, linen, ceremony furniture, cleaning, security or other requirements.

A venue that initially looks more affordable can sometimes end up costing significantly more once everything required to host your wedding is added.

This is one of the reasons we love all-inclusive wedding packages. Looking at the complete wedding cost from the beginning makes it much easier to compare your options and stay within budget.

3. Booking Suppliers Without Considering the Overall Style

Pinterest and Instagram make it very easy to fall in love with individual ideas. The problem comes when every decision is made separately.

You might love one style of florals, another style of furniture and a completely different tablescape, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll work together.

Before booking your styling elements, establish an overall direction for your wedding. Think about your colour palette, venue, florals, furniture, stationery and smaller details as one complete design rather than individual pieces.

A clear vision will make your decisions easier and create a much more cohesive result.

4. Underestimating How Much Time Wedding Planning Takes

There is a lot happening behind the scenes of a wedding.

Supplier research, quotes, contracts, emails, appointments, styling decisions, floor plans, timelines, guest lists, seating plans and logistics all take time.

Couples often start planning thinking they’ll handle things as they come, only to find themselves managing dozens of suppliers and decisions as the wedding gets closer.

Creating a planning timeline from the beginning, or working with a wedding planner in Perth, can help spread the workload across your engagement rather than leaving everything until the final few months.

5. Forgetting About the Guest Experience

Of course, your wedding should reflect the two of you. But it’s also worth thinking about how the day will flow from your guests’ perspective.

Consider things like:

  • How easily can guests move between the ceremony and reception?
  • Is there somewhere comfortable to go between formalities?
  • Will there be enough food and drinks?
  • Are there long periods where guests are waiting?
  • Is transport or accommodation something you need to consider?

The best weddings aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re often the ones where the entire experience feels effortless.

6. Not Having a Wet Weather Plan

If any part of your wedding is outdoors, you need a Plan B.

And ideally, you should actually like your Plan B.

Waiting until the week of the wedding to think about rain can create unnecessary stress. When choosing your venue and planning your ceremony and reception, understand exactly what will happen if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Ask your venue about undercover options, indoor alternatives and when a wet weather decision needs to be made.

7. Trying to Fit Too Much Into the Wedding Day

It’s easy to keep adding things to your timeline.

Another location for photos. Another speech. Another activity. Another special moment.

But a wedding shouldn’t feel like you’re racing through a checklist.

Allow enough time for getting ready, travelling between locations, photographs, meals and formalities. Importantly, give yourselves some breathing room to actually enjoy the day.

A well-planned wedding timeline should provide structure without making the day feel overly scheduled.

8. Leaving Important Decisions Until the Last Minute

Some wedding decisions can absolutely wait. Others can’t.

Popular Perth wedding venues and wedding suppliers can book well in advance, particularly during peak wedding season.

Your venue, planner, photographer, celebrant, entertainment and other priority suppliers are generally worth securing early. Smaller styling decisions can often be made later.

Knowing what needs to be booked now versus what can wait will make the planning process much less overwhelming.

9. Trying to Do Everything Yourself

DIY can be a great way to personalise your wedding, but be realistic about what you want to be doing in the days leading up to it.

Setting tables, collecting furniture, arranging florals, coordinating suppliers and troubleshooting logistics might save money, but it can also mean spending the morning of your wedding working rather than enjoying it.

If you’re planning things yourself, consider bringing in a wedding day coordinator to take over the final logistics and manage everything on the day.

That way, you, your family and your bridal party aren’t responsible for making sure everything happens according to plan.

10. Forgetting What the Day Is Actually About

Perhaps the easiest mistake to make is getting so caught up in creating the “perfect” wedding that planning stops being enjoyable.

Your wedding doesn’t need every trend you’ve saved on Pinterest.

Choose the things that genuinely matter to you as a couple. Spend where you see value, skip what you don’t care about and create a celebration that feels like you.

At the end of the day, the best weddings aren’t perfect because every tiny detail went exactly according to plan. They’re memorable because they feel personal, joyful and completely yours.
