Wedding invitations are an important part of your wedding planning journey. They don’t just tell your guests where and when to celebrate with you. They also set the tone for your wedding day!
From choosing your stationery style to collecting RSVPs and finalising your guest list, getting your invitations organised early can make the rest of your planning much easier.
Your Wedding Invitation Timeline
Knowing when to send each piece of stationery can help keep your wedding planning on track.
12–18 Months Before: Set Your Date
Once your venue and wedding date are confirmed, start thinking about your stationery. Finalise your guest list and decide whether you would like to send save-the-dates.
6–12 Months Before: Send Save-the-Dates
Save-the-dates aren’t essential, but they’re particularly helpful if you have guests travelling interstate or overseas.
Include your names, wedding date and location, along with a note that the formal invitation will follow.
3–4 Months Before: Send Invitations
As a general guide, send your formal wedding invitations around 12–16 weeks before your wedding.
This gives guests plenty of time to RSVP, organise travel and accommodation and make arrangements for the day.
For destination weddings or celebrations with lots of travelling guests, consider sending invitations 4–6 months ahead.
6–8 Weeks Before: Set Your RSVP Deadline
Set an RSVP deadline around 6–8 weeks before your wedding. This gives you time to confirm final numbers with your venue and caterer and start creating your seating plan.
4–6 Weeks Before: Finalise Guest Details
Once your RSVPs are in, finalise your guest numbers, dietary requirements and seating arrangements.
This is also the time to organise details such as place cards, menus and table numbers.
What Should Your Wedding Invitation Include?
Your invitation should give guests everything they need to know about your celebration.
Be sure to include:
- Your names
- Wedding date
- Ceremony location
- Reception location
- Start time
- Dress code
- RSVP details and deadline
- Wedding website, if applicable
- Any important guest information
If your ceremony and reception are at different locations, clearly include both addresses and any relevant transport or timing information.
Don’t Forget the Extra Details
Depending on your wedding, guests may also need information about accommodation, parking, transport, dietary requirements or whether children are invited.
Rather than trying to fit everything onto one invitation, consider using a wedding website or additional information card.
Make Your Invitations Part of Your Wedding Planning
Your stationery is one of the first opportunities to introduce your wedding’s overall style.
Think about how your invitations can connect with your colour palette, flowers, styling and other details planned for the day. Consistent fonts, colours and textures can create a cohesive look from the moment your guests receive their invitation through to the wedding itself.
A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
Your invitations might seem like a small part of your wedding, but getting them organised early can make a big difference to the rest of your wedding planning.
With a clear timeline, accurate guest information and a little organisation, you can send your invitations with confidence and focus on everything else that makes your wedding uniquely yours.
