Wedding planning is exciting, but knowing what to do and when can quickly become overwhelming. When should you book your photographer? Send invitations? Finalise your floor plan?
A clear wedding planning timeline makes everything much easier. Here’s our simple month-by-month guide to keep your planning on track from “yes!” to “I do.”
12+ MONTHS TO GO: START WITH THE BIG THINGS
You’re engaged! Before getting lost in Pinterest boards, start with the decisions that shape your whole wedding.
- Set your wedding budget
- Create an approximate guest list
- Choose your preferred date or season
- Research and tour wedding venues
- Book your venue
- Consider hiring a wedding planner
- Start researching key suppliers
Confetti tip: Work out your top three wedding priorities as a couple. It’ll make those budget decisions much easier later.
10 TO 12 MONTHS: BUILD YOUR WEDDING TEAM
Venue locked in? Now it’s time to secure the people who will bring your day together.
Start booking your photographer, videographer, celebrant, florist, entertainment, hair and makeup, and wedding planner or stylist.
Popular wedding suppliers can book well in advance, especially for peak Saturday dates, so don’t leave your must-haves too late.
8 TO 10 MONTHS: FIND YOUR STYLE
Now for the fun stuff!
Start turning those saved posts and Pinterest boards into one clear wedding style. Think about your colour palette, florals, furniture, table settings, signage, lighting and overall atmosphere.
This is also a great time to organise save-the-dates, accommodation and transport if needed.
6 TO 8 MONTHS: FILL IN THE DETAILS
Your wedding should really start taking shape now.
Focus on wedding party outfits, your cake, stationery, styling selections, florals, transport and ceremony details.
If you have guests travelling for your wedding, give them plenty of notice to arrange accommodation and travel.
4 TO 6 MONTHS: BRING IT ALL TOGETHER
This stage of wedding planning is all about connecting the pieces.
Send your invitations, plan your ceremony, confirm your menu and drinks, organise wedding rings and start thinking about your wedding day timeline.
You can also begin finalising your signage, stationery and styling details.
2 TO 3 MONTHS: LOGISTICS TIME
Your wedding is getting close!
Start finalising:
- Guest numbers and dietary requirements
- Seating arrangements
- Your floor plan
- Wedding day timeline
- Ceremony and reception formalities
- Supplier timings
- Transport
- Wet weather plans
This is where having a wedding planner or coordinator can make a huge difference, with someone overseeing all those moving parts for you.
1 MONTH TO GO: FINAL CHECKS
It’s officially wedding month!
Confirm your final guest numbers, seating plan, supplier timings, outstanding payments, ceremony details and wedding day timeline.
Complete your final dress and suit fittings, prepare anything that needs to go to the venue and attend your wedding rehearsal if you’re having one.
1 WEEK TO GO: HAND IT OVER
The planning is done. Now it’s time to enjoy it!
Pack everything you need, confirm transport, check the weather and hand over supplier contacts and final logistics to your wedding coordinator.
There will always be little last-minute things that pop up. The goal of good wedding planning is to make sure you’re not the person dealing with them on your wedding day.
WEDDING DAY: YOU’RE DONE!
No spreadsheets. No supplier calls. No checking whether the florist has arrived.
Your only job today is to get married and have the best time.
